  11.           Project officials report a light-sensing instrument ì
  12. ì
  13. aboard NASA's Voyager 1, that had difficulty during encounter ì
  14. ì
  15. with the planet Jupiter March 5th, has been confirmed as no ì
  16. ì
  17. longer being able to record useful data.
  18.  
  19.           Tests conducted last week indicate that the light ì
  20. ì
  21. sensitivity of the instrument, called a photopolarimeter, has ì
  22. ì
  23. almost reached zero.  The photopolarimetry is one of eleven ì
  24. ì
  25. science experiments conducted by the Voyager spacecraft and ì
  26. ì
  27. is designed to detect surface and atmospheric chemicals on ì
  28. ì
  29. Jupiter and Saturn and their moons.

  31.           Data was received from an identical instrument ì
  32. ì
  33. aboard Voyager 2 during its flyby of Jupiter last July 9.

  35.           The two Voyagers, which were launched in the summer ì
  36. ì
  37. of 1977, sent to Earth thousands of brilliant TV photos and ì
  38. ì
  39. made major new discoveries about Jupiter and its four large  ì
  40. ì
  41. moons.

  43.           Both spacecraft are operating normally in their ì
  44. ì
  45. cruise to Saturn.  Voyager 1 will reach Saturn next November
  46.  
  47. 12 and Voyager 2, on August 25, 1981.
